GPS Requirements for IC Rollers

To ensure accurate and consistent survey grade data collection during the research time period, the following capabilities for the IC roller GPS systems is required:
  • RTK-GPS (Real Time Kinematic-GPS) systems on machines and one hand held "rover" unit.
  • System reports and records values in Northing and Easting and vertical position in meters in UTM coordinates for the project site.
  • If an offset is necessary between GPS antenna and center of drum it has been inputted and validated.

Technical assistance by the roller manufacture(s) or GPS equipment manufacturer(s) will be provided at no additional cost to the Contractor in accordance with the following requirements:

  • On-site staff with sufficient technical knowledge to setup roller mounted GPS equipment and provide input to the research team in equipment operation the first day of the scheduled field research effort.
  • Contact information of personnel with sufficient technical knowledge to assist the research team with technical questions during field testing when on-site technical assistance is not available.

The IC roller manufacturer(s) will be responsible for providing the roller-mounted GPS receiver/radio and the separate base station. Prior to the beginning of the data collection during the compaction operation, the GPS setup will be validated using a survey grade hand-held GPS "rover" unit to ensure that the roller-mounted GPS is providing accurate positioning data.
